God changed God's "mind."
Not sure if a divine entity
has a "mind"---
such a human concept---
but it's the best we can do
to understand the limitless,
the mystery,
that is God---
we put God in human terms.
Why did God change directions?
Because humanity did.
Negative consequences were abandoned.
Because humanity turned the corner.
Because humanity changed its ways.
So, it's not so much that God changed.
But humanity changed.
This is a God of second chances.
There is always hope.
